The Subject Position in Spanish Nominalized Infinitives

چکیده

Marcus Berger, University of Michigan 0. While much recent work has focused on various nominal and verbal properties of syntactic nominalizations, relatively little work has investigated how their internal structure is derived. Many authors adopt a ‘mixed projection’ hierarchy in which verbal projections appear interpolated into an otherwise nominal hierarchy. The resulting combination of projections accounts for the comcomitant nominal and verbal properties of the construction. However, once these projections are proposed, many authors assume the derivation to follow straightforwardly, which is not necessarily true. I address this problem by providing an analysis of these ‘mixed’ constructions in Spanish.

French Tough-Movement Infinitives as Deverbal Nominals

In this paper, we argue that predicates of the tough-class in French embed not a verbal infinitive but rather, a gerundive verbal noun. This hypothesis allows us to capture a number of unexpected restrictions on French tough-movement discussed by Legendre (1986). We show that these restrictions are best described as the inability of French tough-movement infinitives to be followed by complement...

Phenomena in French normal and impaired language acquisition and their implications for hypotheses on language development

This paper examines the spontaneous productions of 3 normal and 11 French children with SLI, focussing on infinitives, subject and complement clitics, and determiners. The 3 normal children (1.8–2.10) appear to show roughly concomitant use of infinitives and omission of determiners or pronominal clitics. However, determiner omission and the use of infinitives are different in some respects. Mor...
